As demand for mental health services soars, many people across the UK are facing the difficult reality of long waiting lists for NHS mental health support. Currently, over 1.5 million adults and 541,000 children are either waiting for treatment or actively seeking help through NHS mental health services. For children alone, the numbers are particularly troubling—270,000 remain on waiting lists, while nearly 373,000 referrals were closed without any support provided.
The impact of these delays is significant and personal. Many waiting for help report that their mental health is deteriorating; in fact, 80% say their symptoms have worsened while they wait. For some, the situation is extreme—adults requiring community mental health care sometimes endure waits of up to two years. This prolonged lack of support can push people into crisis, with severe consequences for their overall well-being.
In light of these delays, many are turning to private treatment options out of necessity, though financial strain makes this difficult for some. The current shortage of NHS resources means that some people are even denied care because their condition is deemed either “not severe enough” or, paradoxically, “too severe.”
Mental health charities are calling on the government to prioritise mental health resources and provide timely, compassionate care for those in need. As the number of people struggling continues to grow, it’s clear that increased investment and accessible support could prevent crises and ease the suffering felt by so many across the country.
For now, NHS staff continue to work tirelessly under the weight of overwhelming demand, but the need for a long-term solution is urgent to ensure that everyone receives the support they deserve.
At Umbrella, we understand the distress these delays cause and are committed to helping. We now offer partially funded mental health sessions to ease the cost of private care for those waiting for NHS support. This initiative aims to bridge the gap, making mental health services more accessible while people wait for NHS resources to become available.
